HTML Links, Anchors & Web Navigation
Master hyperlinks (<a>), target contexts, path resolution rules, security exploits (reverse tabnabbing), and modern navigation protocols.
1. The Anchor Element & URL Anatomy
The <a> (Anchor) element is the fundamental connective tissue of the World Wide Web. By pairing the href (Hypertext Reference) attribute with a destination URL, anchors enable non-linear navigation between documents, resources, and specific coordinates on a page.
💡 Real-World Analogy: Global Teleportation Portals
Think of web links like a universal transit network:
• The Anchor Tag (<a>) is the doorway or gateway.
• The href Attribute is the destination address coordinates printed on your transit ticket.
• The Text / Image Inside is the visible billboard inviting travelers to step through!
Before writing links, understanding the complete anatomy of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is critical for technical interviews:
Scheme & Hostname
Protocol & Server Domain
https://: Secure encrypted HTTP protocol scheme.codewithin.com: The DNS resolved domain address.:443: Optional network port number.
Path & Endpoints
Hierarchical Resource Path
/topics/html/: Folder structure on the server.links-navigation.html: Target document asset.- Defaults to
index.htmlif omitted.
Queries & Fragment
State & Scroll Targets
?track=frontend&mode=dark: Key-value parameters.#security-rules: Element ID jump marker (hash fragment).- Fragment is never sent to server (client-side only).

2. Relative vs Absolute Paths vs Root URLs
One of the most common pitfalls during placement coding tests is miscalculating relative directory traversing:
| Path Syntax | Path Type | Resolution Behavior | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
https://... |
Absolute URL | Loads directly from the global internet, completely ignoring current page folder location. | https://codewithin.dev/careers |
/assets/logo.png |
Root-Relative | Starts resolution from the root folder of the domain (e.g. https://domain.com/assets/...). |
/css/style.css |
./details.html or details.html |
Same-Directory | Searches in the exact same folder as the currently executing HTML document. | ./semantic-html.html |
../css/flexbox.html |
Parent Step-Up | Steps up one folder level, then navigates into the neighboring css/ folder. |
../../index.html (Steps up 2 levels) |
3. Target Contexts & Reverse Tabnabbing Security
The target attribute dictates the browsing context where the linked document will open:
Standard Target Values
target="_self"(Default): Opens in the same tab / frame.target="_blank": Spawns in a brand new tab or window.target="_parent": Opens in the immediate parent frame.target="_top": Escapes all nested iframes to take over full window.
The Reverse Tabnabbing Exploit
When opening target="_blank", the newly opened window gets a JavaScript reference to window.opener. A malicious site can run:
window.opener.location = "https://phishing-login.com";
Shield with: rel="noopener noreferrer"
<!-- SECURE: Closes the window.opener execution bridge & hides HTTP referrer headers -->
<a href="https://github.com"
target="_blank"
rel="noopener noreferrer">

</a>
<!-- SEO Link Relations: rel="nofollow" and rel="sponsored" -->
<a href="https://partner-ad.com"
target="_blank"
rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored">

</a>
4. Special URL Schemes & Download Attributes
Anchors can trigger native operating system client applications directly via specialized URL protocols:
<!-- 1. Secure External Tab Link -->
<a href="https://github.com"
target="_blank"
rel="noopener noreferrer">

<!-- 2. Direct Telephony Trigger -->

Test your understanding of link protocols, target scopes, and web security with 5 interactive interview questions:
🎯 Placement Interview Takeaways
- Q: What happens if an anchor tag has no
hrefattribute?
Ans: It becomes a placeholder link. It cannot receive keyboard focus via the Tab key, is not announced as an active link by screen readers, and does not respond to Enter keypresses. - Q: What is the difference between
rel="nofollow"andrel="noreferrer"?
Ans:rel="nofollow"tells search engine crawlers (Googlebot) not to pass PageRank SEO authority to the linked target.rel="noreferrer"strips the HTTPRefererrequest header so the destination site cannot see where the traffic originated. - Q: How do fragment hash links (
#section-id) work?
Ans: The browser scrolls to the element whoseidmatches the hash. If no matching ID exists, legacy browsers fall back to looking for<a name="...">. Fragment identifiers are strictly client-side and never transmitted over the network in HTTP requests.
